Overview

If your home is built using solid wall or hollow block construction methods, cavity fill is not an option. Internal Insulation (dry-lining) which involves fixing insulation to the inner surfaces of your external walls is one of the alternatives available to you. Internal insulation is a more affordable option than installing external wall insulation. The only difficulty associated with Internal Insulation is the disruption that it can cause while work is being carried out internally.

Case Study Example

Noreen & Bill have a 4 bedroom detached house with a footprint of 152 sqm (1636ft2), with an annual heating bill of €1,800. Their home had a combination of hollow-block and solid masonry walls, so to improve their insulation level they had to choose internal or external insulation. Opting for internal insulation, this measure has resulted in annual savings in their heating bill of more than €480. They obtained grant aid of €2500 from the Home Energy Savings scheme to help with the overall cost. Typical costs for this type of insulation would are between €7,000 - €10,000.

Sizing and Design

Internal insulation involves fixing a layer of insulation to the internal surfaces of the external wall. The layer of insulation is then finished with a plasterboard. The insulation is sealed with a vapour check to avoid humid air penetration within the home.

Internal Insulation does involve removing all objects from the areas that are being internally dry-lined e.g. radiators, presses etc. Therefore careful consideration should be given before deciding what your preferred insulation option should be.

• Internal Insulation is suitable for all home types, and is an ideal retrofit solution.
• Internal Insulation does not require planning permission.
• Internal Insulation has a positive effect on the BER of a dwelling

Installation Procedure

Internal dry-lining involves applying 25-50mm insulation layer on the inside of the external walls covered with plasterboard fixed with an adhesive and metal fastners. The overall thickness is 40mm-100mm. Installation should be carried out by a registered Plasterer.
