Overview
Condensing boilers get their name because they condense periodically. In other words, they extract heat from the exhaust gases that would otherwise escape through the flue-turning water vapour from the gases back into liquid water or condensate. Oil boilers are very efficient but do offer less choice of system heating than gas. In order to run an oil boiler you need a tank installed outside your house.
Case Study Example
John’s last boiler was installed in his 4 bed home in 1995. When purchased it had an operating efficiency of 78%. The boiler wasn’t serviced very often over the years and through general wear and tear lost some of its efficiency. When he finally decided to replace the boiler it was possibly operating well below 70% efficiency. Following an A-Rated Energy assessment, a high efficiency condensing boiler (rated 92% efficiency) with a Heating Control System was installed. Over the following year John’s heating bill was reduced by around 45%, resulting in an annual saving of over €750. John obtained a grant of €700 via the Home Energy Saving scheme. The average cost for such upgrade measures is between €3,200 and €5,200.
Sizing and Design
A condensing boiler captures more usable heat from its fuel than a non condensing boiler. It’s high operating efficiency is made possible by the design of the condensing boiler’s large or sometimes dual heat exchanger. The heat exchanger makes sure that as much heat as possible is transferred through the flue.
There are three different types of high-efficiency condensing boiler:
• Combination (Combi)
• Regular
• System
Boiler Selection
In order to help you select the most suitable boiler for your requirements you should consider the following;
|
Consideration |
Most suitable boiler |
|
You want to use your loft space for a room conversion or other purpose |
COMBI |
|
You live in a flat or bungalow (i.e. have very little or no roof space) |
COMBI |
|
Your home has more than 2 bathrooms |
REGULAR OR SYSTEM |
|
Your main water pressure is low |
REGULAR OR SYSTEM |
|
You want to replace an old boiler to improve an existing conventional central heating system |
REGULAR, SYSTEM or COMBI |
|
There is a need to have hot water available on tap without waiting for it to heat up. |
COMBI |
