Overview
Wood Chip boilers offer the warmth and comfort of wood heating while being highly efficient, clean burning and totally automatic, saving you time and money. Wood chip boilers are lit automatically and continue to operate without manual intervention. Automatic fuel supply and thermostatic control means you can enjoy woodchip heating at the switch of a button. Modern wood chip boilers are self cleaning.
Sizing and Design
Wood chip boilers are generally larger than other boilers. They also require storage and space for hoppers when required. Before you embark on choosing a wood chip boiler you firstly need to think where you are going to put it. Wood chip boilers work alongside other technologies, particularly solar thermal. Solar thermal can provide hot water in summer when you don’t need to keep your wood chip boiler on high and reduce the wood fuel consumption in the winter as well.
Wood chip boilers contain a number of elements which ensure that it is a highly efficient technology. These components include
Flues: The flue is used for the exhaust of the boiler. It can be installed through a chimney or outside a building. The flue will be installed to current building regulations.
Constructional Hearth: A Constructional Hearth should be placed under a stove to separate the stove from combustive material and provide protection from the threat of fire.
Air Supply: A boiler must have a secure air supply for safe operation. This can be in the form of a controlled dedicated air supply directly to the appliance, or in the form of a permanent ventilation opening to the room in which the appliance is located.
Thermal Mixing Valve: Best practice calls for the fitting of a thermal mixing valve. This applies to all hot water systems and not just solar heated water systems. Thermal mixing valve mixes cold and hot water together to ensure the water temperature is safe for people to use.
Bulk Fuel Storage: All biomass boiler installations shall require the provision of bulk storage. Bulk storage capacity shall be able to store a minimum of 3 tonnes of wood pellets.
Buffer Heat Store: A buffer tank should be incorporated as part of a wood chip boiler system where appropriate. A buffer cylinder in a domestic biomass heating installation is a primary heat storage/distribution cylinder, which is heated by a boiler to a set temperature and can store the resulting high temperature water for long system standstill periods, until hot water is required.
Operation and Maintenance
It is important to follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and maintenance instructions to ensure the safe and efficient operation of your appliance. It is vital to read and understand the operation characteristics of the particular appliance with particular attention to the start-up and shutdown procedures. Some systems continue to operate after being turned off for a period of time to allow full combustion of remaining fuel in the combustion chamber.
